Senior AI Engineer
Pieoneers is seeking a Senior AI Engineer to join our AI development team in Vancouver, BC with opportunities to work remotely. You'll help clients turn AI ideas and prototypes into reliable production products across web and mobile.
Role + Responsibilities:
- Designing and building LLM-powered features and products: assistants, AI agents, RAG search, document processing and workflow automation
- Taking AI prototypes and proofs of concept to secure, scalable production systems
- Choosing the right models and approach (hosted APIs, open-weight models, fine-tuning) based on quality, cost, latency and privacy
- Building retrieval pipelines: data ingestion, chunking, embeddings, vector search and reranking
- Designing evaluations and monitoring AI quality in production
- Implementing guardrails, prompt injection protection and safe handling of sensitive data
- Integrating AI into web and mobile apps together with front-end and React Native developers
- Advising clients on what AI can realistically deliver for their business
- Collaborating with a cross-functional team
- Comfortable working with a flat hierarchy
Skills & Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of software engineering experience, including 2+ years building production applications with LLMs
- Excellent Python skills; experience with FastAPI or Django
- Hands-on experience with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini) and open-weight models
- Experience with RAG and vector databases (pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant or similar)
- Experience building agents and tool-calling workflows; familiarity with MCP
- Understanding of LLM evaluation and observability tools (Langfuse, LangSmith or similar)
- Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL, Docker and cloud platforms (AWS or GCP)
- Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-technical clients
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
- University degree in computer science, engineering or a related field
- Commitment to professional development and higher learning
Bonus Points:
- Experience with fine-tuning and self-hosting models (vLLM, Ollama)
- Classic ML experience (PyTorch, scikit-learn), computer vision or speech
- TypeScript, React or React Native experience
- MLOps and CI/CD for AI systems
- Open-source contributions, published projects or talks on AI
