Legacy System Modernization for Industrial CompaniesIt Has Run Your Operations for Years.
Now Make It Last.
The legacy software behind your operations still works, but it is getting slower, harder to secure, and more expensive to maintain. We find out exactly why, give you a clear upgrade path, and modernize it without stopping the business.
For manufacturing, shipping, energy, construction, and other companies that run on software built years ago.
The Situation You Are In
Old software is not the problem. Unmanaged old software is.
Industrial companies run on systems that were built to last, and they did. Scheduling, reporting, field data collection, and customer portals written ten or twenty years ago still carry the business every day.
But the world around them moved on. The framework is no longer supported, the operating system stopped receiving security patches, the hardware is out of production, and the one developer who understood it has left. Each year the system gets slower, riskier, and more expensive to keep alive.
That is technical debt, and it compounds. A full replacement feels too risky to attempt, and doing nothing gets riskier every year. Legacy application modernization is the middle path: keep what works, fix what is risky, and upgrade the rest in planned steps.
We are a senior engineering team in Vancouver, working with industrial companies across Canada and the United States.
What We Analyze
Three costs of legacy software, measured.
Performance
Screens that take minutes to load, reports that run overnight, and a system that slows down every time the business grows.
- ✓Database queries and indexes
- ✓Server load and hosting
- ✓Bottlenecks in daily workflows
Security
Unsupported operating systems, frameworks past end of life, and dependencies nobody has patched in years.
- ✓End-of-life platforms and libraries
- ✓Known vulnerabilities (CVEs)
- ✓Access control and data exposure
Maintenance Cost
Every small change takes weeks, one person understands the code, and the hardware it runs on is no longer made.
- ✓Code health and documentation
- ✓Knowledge concentrated in one person
- ✓Hosting, licence, and hardware costs
What We Do
Our legacy modernization process, from diagnosis to done.
Assess
Senior engineers review your code, infrastructure, integrations, and how your team actually uses the system. You receive a written assessment you own, whatever you decide next.
Plan
A phased upgrade path, ranked by business risk and return: what to fix first, what can wait, and what it will cost. No step is committed until you approve it.
Modernize
We implement the plan in small, reversible releases with automated tests and rollback at every stage, so your operations keep running while the system improves underneath them.
Hand Over & Support
Documentation, a clean deployment pipeline, and monitoring your team can rely on. We stay available for support and the next round of improvements.
Step 2, Honestly
Not every legacy system needs a rewrite.
Path A · Refactor & Patch
Stabilize
The system does its job. We patch security gaps, fix the worst performance issues, and make it safe to keep running.
Path B · Incremental Replatform
Modernize Step by Step
We upgrade or replace one part at a time, alongside the running system, until nothing legacy is left.
Path C · Re-architect
Rebuild
The old system becomes the specification. We build its replacement, migrate your data, and switch over on a planned date.
We Have Done This Before
Trusted with systems that run real operations.
Seaspan · Marine Operations
A vessel reporting system that flags performance issues across a fleet of cargo ships before they become costly, so managers can act on the spot.
Read the case study →Stage 3 Systems · Shipping
A long-running partnership on AOS, a port call platform used by global shipping agencies. We migrated it from an outdated Zend PHP version, cut server load, improved database efficiency, and rewrote legacy code, all while customers kept using it.
Read the case study →UBC · Research Platform
The Database of Religious History is in its second decade of production. We modernized its framework foundations, state management, data layer, and styling step by step, about ten times faster than a traditional team, while researchers kept using it without interruption.
Read the case study →RST Technologies · Geotechnical Instruments
RST's inclinometer software ran on a rugged Windows Mobile field computer that was no longer in production. We replaced it with an Android app, so their customers in construction and mining could keep taking readings.

Modernization without the shutdown.
Your operations keep running
No big-bang cutovers. Every change ships in small, tested, reversible steps, scheduled around your production calendar.
Honest recommendations
If the system only needs stabilizing, we say so. The assessment is yours to keep, and you are free to take the plan to another team.
Senior engineers only
Reading a system that has grown for 10 or 20 years takes judgment. You work directly with engineers who have been shipping production software since 2009.
AI-assisted code analysis
We use AI tools to map undocumented code, trace dependencies, and write the missing documentation. On UBC's research platform, that made the modernization about ten times faster than a traditional team.
Who You Work With
The engineers who will do the work.

Andrew Manshin
CTO and Co-Founder
I co-founded Pieoneers in 2009 and have led its engineering since. I decide what in your system stays, what gets replaced, and in which order.

Vasily Reys
Senior Engineer
I am usually the first to open your codebase. I find what is slowing it down and what is exposed, and fix it without breaking what works.
Questions We Hear
Frequently asked questions
Do we have to replace the whole system?
Usually not. Most legacy systems contain years of proven business logic. We keep what works, fix what is risky, and replace parts only when the numbers justify it.
Will modernization disrupt our operations?
We plan around it. Changes ship in small releases with automated tests and a rollback plan, and larger switchovers are scheduled with your team for low-impact windows.
How long does the assessment take?
Typically two to four weeks, depending on the size of the system and the number of integrations. You receive a written report and a working session to walk through it.
How much does legacy system modernization cost?
It depends on the size of the system and the path you choose. Stabilizing a system costs far less than rebuilding it. The assessment is fixed in scope, and it ends with a costed, phased plan, so you know the price of each step before you commit to it.
Should we modernize our legacy software or replace it with an off-the-shelf product?
If an off-the-shelf product fits your processes, it is often the cheaper choice, and we will say so. Custom legacy systems usually survive because they encode how your company actually works, and that is worth keeping. The assessment compares both options honestly.
Which technologies do you work with?
We have modernized PHP, Ruby on Rails, and Windows Mobile systems, and we build with Python, JavaScript, native mobile, and cloud platforms. If your stack is outside our experience, we will tell you in the first call.
Do we have to move to the cloud?
No. Cloud hosting is one option among several. Some systems belong on-premises or next to plant equipment, and the plan reflects that.
Our original developer is gone and nothing is documented. Can you still help?
Yes, that is the most common starting point. Recovering how the system works and documenting it is part of the assessment.
Do we keep ownership of everything?
Yes. Your code, your data, your infrastructure, and your accounts. Always.
